We have just gained Planning and Listed Building Consents for the extension of the Grade II Listed Luke Turner & Co Eleastic Webbing Factory in Leicester.
The value of this Grade II Listed Building resides in its beautiful cast iron structure, expressed externally in the facade, as well as internally, where the structure remains mostly exposed.
Our design investigations looked into:
• Subtly reflecting the original design intention and proportions of the exposed cast-iron frame of the historic building, with its multi-layered format; Stepping back from the listed building facade and using metal profi les to articulate the junctions with the historic building;
• Not competing with the original design in materiality and colour scheme; Taking cues from the host building and interpreting these in a contemporary format with a subdued materials & colour palette, with industrial connotations;
• Adding architectural interest without dominating the original building; a dialogue between the old and the new in a contrasting format, where both components refl ect their era, in a coherent manner.
