Grade II Listed Loft in Shoreditch

NLA Don’t Move Improve 2019

Zeppelin Magazine

The project builds on the powerful character of the existing Grade II Listed roof structure. A family of five finds here their dream home.

The main challenge of the project was to morph the original dysfunctional open plan arrangement into a flexible four bedroom home. Natural light is maximised without compromising on acoustics and on the special character of the building.

GRADE II LISTED BUILDING: The loft is awash with natural light throughout the day owing to 24 rooflights and a circular high level window. Introducing conventional windows in the external walls was not an option, owing to the listed status of the building. This also rightfully protected the striking oak structure, an element of historic interest, entirely exposed to view.

UNDER A TREE: Clustered around the central living space, the en-suite bedroom and the three children rooms nest under the roof structure. In-built furniture frees up space for play in a flexible arrangement. The children bedrooms are imagined as tree-house pods overlooking the courtyard, as if under an old oak.
