Racons Publics Barcelona
The competition was for a proposal to provide shadow to a sun scorched underused public space in Barcelona.
A pre-tensioned cable system generates a dynamic geometry between the existing balconies and the zig-zagging corten steel planters on both sides of the square. The seemingly intricate geometry follows one simple rule and basic construction methods.
Canvas modules stretched between the cable structure are a reinterpretation of the ubiquitous shading devices in the Mediterranean world. The canvas is perforated, with silver foil applied to one side to reflect the midday sun.
The proposal evokes a tree canopy with a dappled silver foliage effect.
